Chispa

This is Chispa. Wherever she appears in Southeast San Francisco, Chispa shares art, music and performances by Southeast SF artists for your enjoyment! Sometimes Chispa spreads out on blankets for neighborhood games and storytelling. Sometimes Chispa sprouts live plants. We trade art for ideas! Play with us and share ideas and you can have some art in exchange. Ask and we’ll show you what we art have on board to choose from. Chispa celebrates the cultural richness of our neighborhoods, our region of the city: The Bayview/Hunters Point, The Excelsior, The Portola and Visitacion Valley. Do you make art, music or poetry? Let us know!

Chispa Autumn Moon Celebration!
Saturday, September 14, 2019
11:00 am – 3:00 pm
Louis Sutter Playground/McNab Lake in McLaren Park

The Chispa Autumn Moon Celebration is an artist-made event in honor of the harvest moon—an observation of the pan-Asian holiday and la luna de la Cosecha. Live music, artist-made games, specially commissioned art and art activities are on offer. Multilingual (Cantonese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, English) and Drag Queen story times complete the program. The event is launched by José Cuellar, PHd aka Dr. Loco, invoking the 4 directions. Mr. Choy’s Traditional Chinese Trio continues and is followed by El Guajiro/Johnny Escobedo and Cynthia Vazquez whose repertoire includes “Fly me to the Moon” and classics in Spanish. Artist and musician, Anne Seeman, plays moon songs from the 20s on her Victrola. Tom xxx’s lunar soundtrack includes snatches of sound from the Moon Landing. Mounted on the Chispa cart are the paintings of Kaiya Canja Wong Jones, whose work explores her tri-cultural heritage, Filipina, Chinese and African American. Kaiya has created a sheet of stickers that can be transformed into lanterns by participants. On board Chispa are the prints that make up the growing Southeast San Francisco Artists Portfolio. Paint faces on our temporary mural or trade us a drawing and you can choose art from the Portfolio to take home. Reproductions of The Cultural Map of Southeast SF, created by Kate Connell and Oscar Melara with Sofia Vivanco Airaghi amplify Chispa’s offerings.
